Apple is planning to deliver two new AirPods models later this year, with Fall 2024 reportedly the release date of these new audio wearables from the Cupertino company.

Currently in its development stage, the report followed up and stated that these new AirPods would start mass production in May, offering a new experience for the company's renowned Bluetooth earphones.

Apple is looking to replace its present AirPods 3 in this development, but instead of a solo release, it would be a two-model release under the main lineup.

Mark Gurman's latest Power On newsletter on Bloomberg shared a new Apple AirPods report meant for a Fall 2024 release, centering on two new variants coming.

This would be the AirPods 4, the fourth-generation release of the non-Pro lineups, featuring a back-to-back drop from Apple.

This two-variant release is a first for Apple's AirPods, as previously, it resorted to offering a Pro version for the upgraded experience. Nonetheless, it will replace both the AirPods 2 and AirPods 3, which Apple currently sells.

First, it will feature USB-C, following last year's AirPods Pro 2, offering improvements in its on-ear fit, updated design, and more.

The high-end variant of the AirPods 4 will feature active noise cancellation (ANC) and Find My for the charging case.

New AirPods Mass Production Starting in May

Gurman added that Apple will begin mass production of the audio wearables this May, centering on the two models codenamed B768E and B768M.

Cupertino expects this new AirPods 4 to do better than its predecessor, with Apple looking to produce as many as 20 to 25 million units of these two new AirPods, marking its biggest launch yet.

It was reported that these new AirPods 4 would be released alongside the iPhone 16 which is expected for Fall 2024, usually going alongside each other's launch.

Apple's AirPods and its Developments

The latest development from Apple on the AirPods end was with the 2nd-generation Pro model, and last Fall 2023, it released an updated charging case version that features the USB-C port.

This came after Apple introduced the iPhone 15, best known for also changing its ports to USB-C, which is featured on all models of the smartphone, not only the Pro versions like earlier speculations.

However, the last release of the AirPods was the original Pro 2, which was introduced in September 2022. The company's wireless earphones business has been slow to develop.

On the other hand, the original AirPods' lineup, a.k.a. the non-Pro versions, saw its last release in 2021 alongside the iPhone 13, offering the third generation to all.

This year may be a different story for Apple's wireless earphones. While 2024 may offer a new release for its beloved wearable, it reportedly features two variants up for grabs.

There is still no specific information regarding the AirPods' fourth generation, particularly its two variants, but it will reportedly replace the AirPods 2 and AirPods 3 on the market once it arrives.
