Yale introduces its affordable retrofit lock, the Yale Approach, which is compatible with Matter-over-Thread technology. Priced at $130, it marks the company's debut in the retrofit smart lock market.

Initially equipped with Wi-Fi capabilities, it promises an upgrade to support Matter-over-Thread connectivity.

Introducing the Yale Approach

Yale unveiled its inaugural retrofit smart door lock, the Yale Approach, priced at $129.99 with built-in Wi-Fi. Designed to be easily installed on the back of your door, it offers smart features such as auto-unlock and remote locking via your smartphone without replacing your existing deadbolt.

The Yale Approach is also compatible with the upcoming wireless Yale Keypad, priced at $69.99. A fingerprint-enabled version is set to launch later this year.

Additionally, Yale plans to release a firmware upgrade option later this year, enabling Matter-over-Thread compatibility for the new lock.

Retrofit locks offer a convenient solution for individuals who cannot change their existing locks, such as renters or homeowners who wish to maintain the aesthetics of their door hardware.

With Yale's latest retrofit smart lock, users can enjoy advanced features like auto-unlocking, auto-locking, and keypad access without replacing their entire deadbolt.

The Yale Approach smart lock gives users control and convenience through the Yale Access app. Users can manage access from the app, view the lock's activity history, and create customized schedules and routines.

Yales Approach Smart Lock Features, Compatibility

A plug-in Yale Connect module facilitates the lock's Wi-Fi connectivity, ensuring easy setup and integration with other smart home devices. Powered by four AA batteries, the lock boasts a battery life of up to 12 months, providing long-lasting reliability.

Moreover, the Yale Approach smart lock is compatible with major smart home platforms, offering users flexibility and versatility in their smart home setups. However, it's important to note that compatibility with Apple Home is currently not available.

Since it's a retrofit lock, you can still use your current key to unlock the door. Additionally, it's compatible with the new Yale Keypad, which can store up to 250 codes and is priced at $179.99 if purchased together.

Yale's product manager, Ryan Daviau, said the keypad is compatible with most existing August smart locks, excluding only the first- and second-generation models. This feature could benefit those considering upgrading to a touchpad keypad for their August lock.

Last year, Fortune Brands acquired both August and Yale's US divisions. With Yale recently releasing its first retrofit lock and new August smart locks absent since 2020, it seems unlikely that we'll see any new hardware from August.

The new Yale Approach lock resembles the $200 August Smart Lock + Connect, debuting in 2017. However, since the Yale Approach is slimmer and more affordable, it's expected to overshadow the August product.
