Valve Tightens Steam Refund Policy: Early Access, Advanced Access Playtime Now Counts Towards Limit

Valve has recently introduced significant adjustments to its refund policy for games purchased prior to their official release dates on the Steam platform.

Updating Steam's Refund Policy

Valve has announced changes to its refund policy on Steam, affecting gamers' ability to request refunds for played titles before their official launch dates. Previously, players were entitled to refunds within 14 days of purchase, provided they hadn't exceeded two hours of gameplay. 

However, Valve's introduction of programs like Early Access and Advanced Access allowed players to accumulate significant playtime before a game's release, exploiting a perceived loophole in the refund system.

Under the revised policy, the two-hour playtime limit for refunds remains intact. However, a notable change is that playtime accrued during Early Access and Advanced Access periods will now count towards this limit. 

This adjustment ensures that players are mindful of their gameplay time, especially during pre-release phases when games may still be undergoing development and refinement.

Additionally, Valve has clarified the start of the refund eligibility period. Unlike before, where the 14-day refund window began upon purchase, it now commences only upon the game's official release date. This change gives users a fair assessment period after the game's launch, allowing them to make informed decisions about their purchase without feeling rushed.

It's worth noting that the standard refund policy applies for pre-purchased titles that are not playable before release. Users can request refunds at any time before the game's release date, with the 14-day refund window and two-hour playtime limit coming into effect upon the game's official launch.

Comparing Early Access to Advanced Access

Unlike Early Access, which entails a unique development model, Advanced Access allows players to experience the game before its full release on Steam.

Games in the program will mark whether any of their pre-purchase editions grant early access to the title before its official launch. Gamers opting for these editions will enjoy the privilege of playing the game ahead of its release.
