Windows Phone 8.1 is the next big update for Microsoft's mobile operating system for smartphones. The new update is expected to bring to the platform several features that users have requested, along with ones that are key and important features on other mobile platforms such as Android, and iOS. One important feature Windows Phone 8 is missing, is a notification center, and by the looks of things from recently leaked images, it appears Microsoft is planning to bring forth that feature in the next update.

A new leak from an alleged Microsoft presentation, detailing new features coming to Windows Phone 8.1, highlighted what appears to be a notification center. The leaked images were published by Winphollowers, though there is no certainty that it is real. However, The Verge claims to have checked its own sources and has confirmed the images to be the real deal.

Instead of giving the feature the standard name of notification center, the image suggests Microsoft will call it "Action Center."

When a user wants to gain access to the Action Center, they will be required to swipe down from the top of the screen. From here, users will have the ability to adjust Wi-Fi settings, Bluetooth among other things. Swipe down further and users will gain access to information regarding their app updates. From this point, users can dismiss or launch as they see fit.

Furthermore, the leaked images suggest that apps will have the power to delete notifications from the Action Center before they are read by the user. However, this is determined by whether or not these notifications are relevant. In addition, the leaked images suggest Microsoft might call the new update, Windows Phone Blue. Strangely enough, this is the very name that has been floating around the rumor mill since the early parts of 2013.

Microsoft plans to add a little blue icon at the top of the screen, which will signal to users that swiping down from this area should bring up the Action Center.

It is clear many of these features were taken from other platforms. However, it is essential for Microsoft to take this route if the software giant wishes for Windows Phone to move forward rather than be stagnant with a bleak future ahead. The Action Center and the rumored Cortana artificial intelligence assistant should bring the Windows Phone platform on par with competing operating systems so far similar features are concerned. Still, the platform needs more apps and more support from OEMs.
