Those owning a Sony Xperia Z smartphone are pretty excited, but others owning an Xperia smartphone, but not the Z handset, are not as happy.

That's because after waiting nearly a month to hear more about an Android Lollipop 5.0 update, Sony is quietly sharing the news that Android Lollipop 5.0 is only going to be available for the Xperia Z.

Xperia handset users have apparently have been steadily bombarding Sony and its social network accounts about Android Lollipop 5.0, asking the same simple question day after day: When is Lollipop 5.0 coming to Xperia?

Sony has finally answered:

"Sony Mobile hasn't started to roll the Android 5.0 Lollipop update to Xperia Z series owners yet, but we get asked almost daily what the plan is for those who didn't buy a Xperia Z series device last year. This includes the Xperia C3, E1, E3, M2, M2 Aqua, T2 Ultra and T3," stated an official blog post.

In a few tweets on social network Twitter this week, Sony made its formal declaration and with each response to an Xperia user, the smartphone maker also apologized.

"Hi. We can advise that the Android 5.0 Lollipop update is going to be released for the entire Xperia Z series only, we do apologize," tweeted @sonyxperia.

That essentially means Xperia Z handset owners will enjoy all the enhancements Lollipop 5.0 brings to the mobile experience, while the Xperia C3, E1, E3, M2, M2 Aqua, T2 Ultra and T3 will remain on the KitKat mobile OS, likely forever.

Some Sony fans noted they expected such an announcement. Others are just plain disappointed.

"It was kinda expect but still disappointing," tweeted Will S.

Twitter member Raffi said such update decisions are why he doesn't buy a handset with the mobile OS.

"#1 reason that I would never buy an android," tweeted Raffi.

As one Twitter user noted, the news isn't exactly hot or even that critical given the time delay in Lollipop 5.0 coming into play.

"idk what all the lollipop craze is about. IT'S ALMOST A YEAR OLD AND LIKE 1.2% of phones have it. by the time people can get lollipop the new OS will be announced. kit kat runs just fine on my xperia z3v so I'm not in a rush for lollipop," tweeted Grant MacKenzie.
