Google has released the Android 5.1 Lollipop over-the-air update for the LG G Pad 8.3 Google Play Edition. Users who own this device can expect the update anytime soon.

As Android Police reports, the OTA update for the 2013 LG tablet started rolling out to all users beginning Monday.

The update, which has the build number LGGP83GPE, is approximately 204 MB in size. Users who are running stock Android on their devices can simply open their tablet's Settings, scroll down to About tablet, and check for System updates to see if the update is already available to them. If it is, tapping on Download will automatically download and install Android 5.1 Lollipop.

Users who have however modified their tablets will need to flash a factory image, which can be downloaded directly here, to update to Android 5.1 Lollipop.

The update for the Google Play Edition for the LG tablet comes as a surprise, since many devices that users expected to receive the OTA update for Android 5.1 Lollipop earlier are lagging behind. Google's own Nexus 9, for instance, still runs on Android 5.0.2 Lollipop, and so do the Nexus 4 smartphone and both generations of the Nexus 7 tablet. The Nexus 6 and the Nexus 5 have already received updates to the latest version of Android Lollipop.

Build LGGP83GPE of Android 5.1 Lollipop focuses mainly on issues that many Android device users have been complaining about since updating their systems to Android Lollipop, although the bug fixes are mostly for minor problems. The first major update to the operating system includes a number of new features that improve upon security and user experience.

For instance, Device Protection is a remarkable addition. This new feature keeps devices running on Android 5.1 Lollipop safe by locking lost or stolen devices that will remain locked until the user signs in with his or her Google account. The lock applies even on phones that have gone through a factory reset.

The newest version also includes dual-SIM support, a Priority Mode alarm for turning off notifications until the device's alarm goes off, an improved Quick Settings and support for "crystal clear" HD audio calls.

Google has also released the Android 5.1 Lollipop update for the LG G2. Plenty of users have however flocked to the LG G2 Google+ community page to report various problems with the update — including shorter batter life, slow charging and the inability to make calls over the Verizon network.
