It's been two years since Halo 5: Guardians made its grand debut, and since then, fans have seen quite a bit. Multiplayer has been the clear focus so far, with numerous videos and a successful beta late last year.

Surprisingly, 343 Industries has kept Halo 5: Guardians' story close to its chest — last month's Game Informer coverage changed that slightly, but for the most part, fans have yet to see anything from the single-player side of the game.

Everyone's expecting Halo 5: Guardians to have a huge presence at Microsoft's E3 news conference, and that was most certainly the case. 343 Industries finally debuted footage from the game's single-player campaign and detailed several of the game's key new features — including the series' brand-new squad-based combat.

Is this this still the same Halo that fans have been in love with for over 10 years? Despite all of the changes and new features added into Halo 5: Guardians, that answer looks to be a definite "yes."

Right off the bat, Microsoft dove into a new section of Halo 5: Guardians, though this demo wasn't about the Master Chief; instead, it followed Spartan Locke and Fireteam Osiris through a worn-torn Covenant city. Locke, Buck and the rest of the fireteam are hunting for the Chief ... though the Covenant isn't about to make things any easier.

While fans have already seen a lot of Halo 5: Guardians' new gameplay features, there were still a ton of smaller details strewn throughout the presentation. New Promethean enemies, both on the ground and in the air, made their debut — as did a brand new Covenant weapon. The Plasma Caster looks like it fires small, sticky grenades, and while it was only used for a split second, the Plasma Caster could become one of the series' most powerful weapons.

343 Industries also teased a number of story details: the Chief is mentioned by a gigantic Forerunner automaton, and what appears to be Flood spores begin to take over a Covenant Hunter. The final destruction of the Covenant is also hinted at, and the Arbiter is a prominent character throughout the trailer — though his true motivations remain obscured.

Of course, it wasn't just about single-player: Microsoft teased a brand-new player vs everyone mode titled "Warzone." Details are still sparse, but 343 promised that up to 24 players can get in on the action and that maps are bigger than anything else in series history — plus, multiplayer now connects back into the single-player story, too.

Thankfully, fans will only have to wait a few short months before the game hits store shelves: Halo 5: Guardians is set for release on Oct. 27.
