As Samsung and Apple gear up to unveil their flagship Galaxy Note 5 and iPhone 6s smartphones, respectively, Google-owned Motorola is not far behind in the race. Rumors pertaining to the next-gen Moto X have been swirling for a while, and now a picture of the back panel of the alleged Motorola smartphone has been leaked.

The mysterious image of the rear panel said to belong to Motorola's impending flagship, possibly the Moto X 2015 (or DROID), has popped up online. The Google+ page of Hello Moto Hong Kong posted an image of what is speculated to be the device's back panel.

The image is accompanied by the cryptic message: "Hello New Droid!"

The panel seems to be made of rubberized material, which has diamond-type patterns embossed on it, and is black in color. It suggests that the impending Motorola device the panel is meant for will tout a metal frame, as well as a metal bracket in the center. This middle bracket seems like it will encase the LED flash and camera and have the power button.

Why Motorola is choosing to call the impending leaked smartphone "DROID" and not "Moto X 2015" with a dissimilar textured rear panel is confounding. It is possible that the smartphone will make its way to U.S. carrier Verizon, as suggested by the tiny plastic band at the bottom of the panel. This band could be meant for Verizon's DROID branding as was the case for the DROID Turbo. Therefore, Motorola is plausibly choosing to call the Moto X smartphone DROID.

Rumors hint that the Moto X 2015 will tout a 5.2-inch QHD display with a resolution of 1440 x 2560 pixels. The Verizon offering of the smartphone is, however, speculated to boast a 5.7-inch display.

Under the hood, the smartphone will house a Snapdragon 810 processor and 3GB of RAM. The smartphone will also pack in a powerful 3,280mAh battery, a 16MP rear-facing camera and 5MP selfie camera. It will tout 32GB or 64GB of on-board memory and come with Android 5.1.1 Lollipop out of the box.

In March, Motorola's CEO Rick Osterloh hinted that the Moto X 2015 would launch according to its annual cycle, which means the device will likely be announced sometime in August or September.
