Android Lollipop 5.1.1 Lollipop is due out for the Xperia Z2 and Xperia Z3, Sony Japan just confirmed. The update, firmware build 23.4.A.0.546, has already been cleared by the PTCRB (PCS Type Certification Review Board) and Sony is ready to push it out to consumers, according to a report from Sony Japan (via Xperia Blog).

The firmware has been certified for Xperia Z2, Xperia Z2 Tablet, Xperia Z3, Xperia Z3 Dual (D6633), Xperia Z3 Compact and Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact, the outlet reported.

Sony indicated that the update will roll out in "late July." With just under two weeks left in the month, it seems now qualifies for "late july." But while the update could begin to roll out any day now, Sony will use the remainder of the month to deliver the update over the air in stages and it wouldn't be surprising for the full deployment of Android 5.1.1 to spill over into August.

Xperia owners with qualifying devices will receive an alert in their notifications bar when the update is available to them. For those who missed it or unwittingly swiped it away, the update can be pull down manually. Head to the Settings menu, choose the "About Device" option, select the "Software Update" tile and then tap the "Check for Updates" option.

Android Lollipop 5.1.1 focuses on performance enhancements and bug extermination. Features most likely to be noticed by consumers include more Notifications menu options for managing their devices' wireless radios, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, and a refreshed set of icons for the Settings menu.

For those interested in what's next, it appears that all mentioned mobile devices are eligible for the next version of Android, the Android M. Sony has started testing the Android M preview on 14 of its devices; however, that doesn't mean they'll all receive the next version of Android, it is just they're all good candidates for it.

The devices involved in the preview testings included the Sony Xperia Z3; Sony Xperia Z3 Compact; Sony Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact; Sony Xperia Z2; Sony Xperia Z2 Tablet; Sony Xperia Z1; Sony Xperia Z1 Compact; Sony Xperia Z Ultra; Sony Xperia M3; Sony Xperia M2; Sony Xperia T2 Ultra; Sony Xperia T3; Sony Xperia L; Sony Xperia S.
