The latest version of Nvidia's Shield tablet has received some fairly high marks across the board, both as a gaming device and as an all-purpose tablet, but it's now getting attention for a decidedly less positive reason. The company announced today that it's recalling a large number of the devices due to a battery issue that could cause overheating and a potential fire.

According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, the recall affects some 88,000 tablets in all (about 83,000 sold in the U.S. and 5,000 in Canada) and includes models sold between July 2014 and July 2015. Somewhat counter-intuitively, while owners of the tablets are advised to stop using them, Nvidia is first asking them to perform a software update and then check the settings to verify the exact battery model used in the tablet. If it's the affected model, you can then select the battery there and launch the recall application on the device.

Those with an affected device will get a free replacement from Nvidia, and, while there have been no reports of injuries, the CPSC says that there have been four reports of overheating and two reports of damage to flooring. So, it's likely best not to put off starting the recall process any longer than you have to.
