A long time ago, in a galaxy  not so far, far away, Guardians in Bungie's Destiny journeyed to Old Russia in search of a fabled cavern filled with brightly-colored goodies. It was called the Loot Cave.

Longtime Destiny players no doubt remember the cave, which simultaneously represented both what was great and what was terribly broken about Bungie's sci-fi shooter. Obtaining better gear quickly and reliably was unheard of in the early days of the game, so players discovered an exploit in the form of a cave that would endlessly spawn weak enemies for players to farm. Due to being able to kill so many enemies so quickly without having to even move, a 10-minute session of shooting aimlessly into a dark cave would result in multitudes of engrams for players to take to Destiny's Tower and decode with the hope of getting something usable.

It's been almost a year since Bungie "fixed" the cave exploit, and in the process, created a legend. They even added an in-game memorial in the form of a pile of corpses at the site that, if disturbed, triggers a creepy voiceover.

However, not all Destiny players are up to speed on the events that transpired in that seemingly random cave on Earth.

Take players like Reddit user sradac, for example. The user created a thread on the Destiny sub-Reddit, inquiring about a mysterious cave and the pile of corpses within it.

"There is a cave next to where all the Hive come out of, and just inside the entrance to that cave is a pile of corpses," sradac writes. "If you "disturb" the corpses you get a really creepy voice that says something about Rahool. Now, we all know Rahool is an evil bastard. Did he murder them? Did he sacrifice them to The Hive for necrotic knowledge? Do we have any idea what the significance is behind these bodies?"

The responses were numerous and hilarious. In true Destiny community fashion, players gathered around the virtual campfire to tell sradac of days long gone.

"In the beginning, there was nothing and out of that nothingness came the Hive from their Loot Cave in the Skywatch," writes user MisterWoodhouse. "The Guardians of the Last City ventured to Old Russia to stem the tide of the Hive invasion from this magical cave and the millions of Hive they killed yielded loot. Eventually, the Hive overlords cut the dimensional link to this cave, their secret entrance into our world having been discovered, but not before leaving a monument to their defeat."

User NorseFenrir had some fun with sradac too.

"Be warned, Guardians. Many go in search of another fabled Loot Cave to replace that which was lost, but rarely are they satisfied ... We must never forget our hubris, for it was our own downfall," he writes. "For we did not play the game as the great Lord Bun-Gie intended, and lo, we were punished duly."

The thread goes on and on with players recounting stories of countless hours lost mindlessly mowing down Hive with the hope of obtaining a purple engram. Eventually, sradac catches on.

"OKAY OKAY I GET IT!!!!! I'm going to hide now," sradac writes in an update to the original post. "Also, I hope each of you are jumped by Randal your next time in Forgotten Shore and all you get from Crucible are Gilgamesh shaders.

"(In seriousness thank you for letting me be a part of the day one fun. Even if its at my own expense. I'm sure if this was any other online community I would have been downvoted to oblivion and never actually told these fun stories about what the bodies are)."

Now, sradac is up to speed just in time for Destiny's third expansion, The Taken King. Just think: new players joining Destiny for the first time with the Taken King might not ever know that their Ghost was at one time voiced by Peter Dinklage of Game of Thrones fame. No doubt, there will be stories told about "Dinklebot" as well in the months and years to come.
