The next-generation Surface Pro 4 tablet could launch in less than two months, with rumors pointing to an October 4 unveiling.

The powerful Surface Pro 3 is expected to get an even more powerful successor soon, as Microsoft will reportedly take the wraps off a new Surface Pro 4 powerhouse in early October. The new-generation tablet is tipped to come as a major upgrade over its predecessor.

Microsoft has yet to offer any official details on the upcoming device, but the latest rumors paint an exciting picture. Tom Warren, senior editor for The Verge and founder of WinRumors, recently posted a number of intriguing tweets regarding the Surface Pro 4.

If Warren's claims turn out to be accurate, the Surface Pro 4 will boast a larger display, a thinner and lighter build compared with the Surface Pro 3, and will not pack Intel Core M chips.

Warren said the upcoming Surface Pro 4 will be an incremental upgrade over last year's model, and indicated that it may not sport a USB Type-C connector as earlier buzz had suggested. In response to a tweet regarding the possibility of a USB C port for file transfers, Warren replied that it's "not likely."

If Microsoft is not ready to join the USB Type-C party just yet, the Surface Pro 4 could come with USB 3.0 and USB 3.1 ports, which will be disappointing for some.

When another Twitter user asked whether to cancel a recently placed Surface Pro 3 order and wait for the Surface Pro 4 instead, Warren's reply was "definitely wait for 4.October," further confirming the early October announcement and the notable upgrade over its predecessor.

Previous rumors, meanwhile, have suggested that Microsoft could launch its Surface Pro 4 in two display variants, one with a 12-inch screen and the other with a larger 14-inch display. Other rumored specs include a Skylace chip, various RAM configurations of up to 16GB, several storage configurations of up to 1TB, and superior battery performance compared with the Surface Pro 3. On the software side, the Surface Pro 4 will likely come running the latest Windows 10 out of the box.

It's all still speculation at this point, which means that some details regarding the upcoming Surface Pro 4 may turn out to be inaccurate. As always, in such cases, take everything with a grain of salt until official confirmation. Nevertheless, judging by the recent Surface Pro 3 price cuts (see image above), the October 4 unveiling date for the Surface Pro 4 sounds plausible.
