The next time you visit the Apple Store, you can grab an iPod for yourself. Why? Apple is apparently shifting them to the accessory shelves section.

Previously, iPods were kept in the back of Apple Stores, along with signature products such as iPads and Macs. Now, they will be in the company of non-signature Apple products such as its Time Capsule and Apple TV.

The latest information comes courtesy of 9to5Mac, which cites Apple retail managers as its sources. Apple will also supposedly do away with the iPad-based Smart Signs, which are placed next to several display devices.

"Apple is preparing to make significant changes to its stores to simplify the experience by relocating iPod stock to accessory shelves and removing iPad-based Smart Signs, according to several Apple Retail managers briefed today on the plans," reads the report on 9to5Mac.

The changes are anticipated to come into effect on Wednesday, August 19, in U.S. stores.

Recent iPod sales have not been up to the mark, so it makes sense that Apple is moving the iPod into the open for greater visibility. So rather than asking an Apple Store employee for a particular iPod model, customers can simply walk in and take the one they desire from the shelf themselves. The company wants to enhance shopping experience in its physical stores, and this direct access saves time that an employee would have spent fishing the device out of storage.

The in-store experience should also be smoother without the Smart Signs. They were a source of confusion to customers who tried to use them as demo iPads, not realizing that they were simply a means for learning more about an Apple product. Instead, Apple will provide the product information directly on the iPhones, iPads and Macs on display.

The move comes at a time when Apple is looking to create a seamless shopping experience for consumers and to amalgamate its online store and website.
