People who are planning to buy themselves a new mid-range unlocked smartphone may already have another option to grab: the new ZenFone 2 variant of Asus equipped with 4GB of RAM as well as 16GB of storage.

This new variant of ZenFone 2 has a price tag of $229, which according to reviews is a pretty good price at what the phone claims to offer to its most exacting customers.

Previously, the Taiwanese company released its two earlier variants of ZenFone: one which showcases 2GB RAM and houses 16GB of built-in storage and the other one is the variant which features 4GB of RAM and comes in 64GB of storage. These are priced at $199 and $299 respectively.

This means that with the new ZenFone 2, users will get less internal storage compared to the previous version which has $299 price tag, but of course, the new version has bigger RAM than the $199 variant.

Reviews say, at $229, the ZenFone 2 variant might be one of the cheapest smartphones so far with 4GB of RAM.

The New Variant's Specifications

The new ZenFone 2 variant is reported to boast a 1.8GHz quad-core Intel Atom Z3560. This is said to be the same as the ZenFone 2 ZE551ML which was unveiled in India.

Other specifications the new device touts to offer include the following: dual-SIM LTE, 13-megapixel rear camera, 5.5-inch Full HD (1080x1920 pixels) IPS display with Corning Gorilla Glass 3, microSD card support, 3000mAh battery and five-megapixel front camera.

"When designing the ZenFone 2, we started with you in mind. As a result, ZenFone 2 has a highly-intuitive control layout, incorporating a physical rear key as part of the new Ergonomic Arc design. Snapping selfies, adjusting the volume and retracing your steps now feels completely natural, regardless of whether you are right- or left-handed. The elegant new shape feels secure and extremely comfortable to hold," reads the product description of ZenFone 2.

Earlier this month, we reported that Asus showed off new ZenFones at IFA. The new variants added to the ZenFone line include the following: Zoom, Selfie, Laser, Max, and Deluxe.

In August, we also featured the unveiling of the new ZenFone 2 Deluxe Special Edition, which is basically the ZenFone 2 but houses a whopping 256GB of built-in storage. However, this special edition was reported to be available only in Brazil and Asus did not mention if it will also be offered in North America.
