It's no secret that Tesla's Model X electric crossover SUV is set to be unwrapped this month. Now, it's official: the company's Model X will soon be unveiled on the night of Sept. 29 at Tesla's factory in Fremont, California.

Reports recently confirmed that the company already sent out invitations to journalists for the official launch.

Tesla touts its hotly awaited Model X as an electric sports utility vehicle. It will be Tesla's third car.

The Model X will be a significant proving point for the company as it needs to show that it can follow up the company's well-received Roadster and Model S sedan with another car that should make a dent in the highly competitive automotive market.

This crossover will use a version of the electric all-wheel drive power train which is found in the Model S "D" versions. The Model X will also boast of a taller chassis wrapped around the car. Moreover, the new model will be equipped with a tougher suspension beneath.

"Every Model X comes with all-wheel drive standard, powered by two independent, digitally controlled electric motors. Brilliantly functional Falcon Wing rear doors fold up and out of the way to allow easy access to third row seats," reads the reservation page of the Model X on the company's website.

The Model X will feature three rows of seats and will accommodate seven passengers. The third row is designed to be folded down to accommodate passengers' luggage. Additionally, the second row can be moved forward to allow more space.

It is also worth noting that the model will also come with sensors installed, allowing the car to avoid obstacles. The company claims that its Model X will offer a 250-mile range on a single charge.

"In relative terms, it appears that the X will see at least as much a demand as the S," said the CEO of Tesla, Elon Musk, during the 2013 fourth-quarter earnings call. "And if I were to guess -- and this is just a guess -- I think the X demand will exceed S demand ... That's my best guess."

Tesla plans to produce between 50,000 and 55,000 of its Model X as well as the Model S in 2015.

Earlier this month, we reported that customers who made reservations for the Tesla Model X SUV, with the tag price of $132,000, can now begin to customize the vehicle. The report noted that customers can customize the colors of the car's interiors and exteriors, for instance.
