Microsoft released its new Office 2016 worldwide Tuesday, Sept. 22. Office 2016 includes new versions of some of Microsoft's best-known apps for Windows, including Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook, OneNote, Project, Visio and Access.

With Office 2016, real-time co-authoring is now built directly into Microsoft's native apps of Word, PowerPoint and OneNote. Skype for Business is also now available in the client apps, allowing users to instant message, screen share, talk or video chat directly in apps. It will also be coming to Office Online later this fall. Office 365 Groups are now integrated into Outlook 2016 and can also be accessed through the Outlook Groups smartphone app.

New updates to Office 365 will also be coming soon. These include Office 365 Planner, which provides tools to help teams better organize their work, updates to OneDrive for Business, including a new sync client for Windows and Mac, higher file size and volume limits per user and a new interface, and GigJam, a new workflow tool currently available in private preview.

Office 2016 is available in 40 languages for PCs operating Windows 7 or higher. Office 365 subscribers can now download the new Office 2016 apps as part of their subscription. Consumer and small-business subscribers will begin receiving automatic updates starting next month, and commercial customers will receive them starting next year. Office 2016 is also now available as a one-time purchase for PCs and Macs.
