Sony's Vaio brand was sold off last year, but now it's returning as its own company. Its first U.S. release is called the Vaio Z Canvas, and as the name suggests, the device is a tablet.

It's different than other tablets, however, starting at $2,199. It also doesn't run a mobile operating system, instead running a full version of Windows 10, and it offers a detachable keyboard for those who need to type. It also offers a battery-powered stylus, as well as editing software for creating both 2D and 3D images.

Vaio has also managed to fit the same performance specs into its 12-inch frame as the 15-inch MacBook Pro. Those specs include a Core i7 processor, 16 GB of RAM and 1 TB of storage. The display itself is 2,560 x 1,704 pixels, with an aspect ratio of 3:2, meaning that users can see a full dSLR photo without having to crop the image.

Of course, the tablet might sound a little like Microsoft's Surface Pro 3, but Vaio's new offering is focused solely on artists. The screen is very bright and the stylus offers 1,024 levels of pressure sensitivity.

There are, of course, things that the new device is missing. It doesn't offer any USB-C ports, and it might be a little weird to see a Haswell processor in the device considering Intel is just about to launch its Skylake processors, but that's probably becasue the Z Canvas device has been out in Japan for five months now.

At $2,199, this device will be a hard sell against its competitors, especially the new iPad Pro, which is cheaper and arguably even better for artists. Those, however, who really want a Windows 10 machine might want to take a look at the Z Canvas.
