Fatal Frame has always been the perfect example of a 'cult-classic': the games are some of the scariest in the entire genre, and yet, they've never really broken into the mass market here in America. Perhaps it's the Japanese setting, maybe it's the fact that the games don't feature any sort of traditional combat—for one reason or another, Fatal Frame has always flown just below the radar.

That being said, the latest entry in the long-running franchise is getting a bit of added star power. And, seeing as Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water is a Wii-U exclusive, it only makes sense that two of Nintendo's biggest heroines would join in on the ghost-hunting adventure. Granted, it's just a pair of costumes, but they look so good they may as well count as separate characters.

First things first: Princess Peach is not one of the costumes that'll be included in Fatal Frame for Wii U. Why exactly Nintendo decided to keep its premier princess out of the game is still a mystery. That being said, the two heroines who did make it into the game more than deserve their time in the spotlight.

It should come as no surprise that Princess Zelda would be included: aside from Peach, the Hylian princess is Nintendo's go-to female lead. Plus, her dress looks absolutely fantastic: if this is the sort of thing that fans should expect to see in the next Legend of Zelda game, they're in for a treat.

The second costume is actually a bit of a surprise: Zero Suit Samus will also be available in Fatal Frame. Nintendo hasn't done much at all with Samus over the past few years. Aside from a few other guest appearances, Super Smash Bros. is the only Nintendo game to feature Samus in a playable role, so her appearance in Fatal Frame is a bit out of left field. Maybe the folks over a Koei-Tecmo are just big Metroid fans ... one way or another, it's definitely a step up from Federation Force.

The best part is that fans won't have to wait much longer to get their hands on the game: Fatal Frame: Maiden of the Black Water is due out on Oct. 22.
