As per a news story by Apple Insider, Apple has introduced the notch display look for its flagship smartphone lineup way back in 2017, when the iPhone X debuted in September that year.

Since then, all of the successors of the iPhone X, including the iPhone XS in 2018, the iPhone 11 the following year, as well as the recent iPhone 12 and iPhone 13, all sported the notch.

It comes even as its Android counterparts, such as the Samsung Galaxy flagship models and OnePlus phones, have already let go of the notch design, replacing it with a less obstructive punch-hole design.

In fact, the South Korean phone maker, Samsung, has already debuted its first-ever under-display selfie camera in the flesh of the Galaxy Z Fold 3.

iPhone 14 Pro to Sport Dual-Hole Face ID

Meanwhile, according to the analyst of Display Supply Chain Consultants, Ross Young, Apple is reportedly starting to ditch the notch design this 2022.

Instead, the design analyst predicts that Apple is replacing the notch design for its flagship mobile device with two holes.

SHANGHAI, CHINA - OCTOBER 12, 2021 - Customers buy iPhone13 phones at apple's flagship smart products store in Shanghai, China, on Oct. 12, 2021. November 11, 2021 - apple lifts restrictions on iPhone13 display repair and will no longer disable Face ID.

The first hole carries a pill-shaped design, which includes the sensors of the Face ID. While the other hole sports punch-hole look for the selfie or front-facing snapper.

The display analyst said that the new pill-shaped and hole design "will be another instantly recognizable display shape for Apple."

He further noted that the two-hole design will still feature the same width as the current notch. However, the new look gives more display estate for its users.

Young further stated that Apple is reportedly debuting the new signature two-hole designs for the higher-end models of the next-generation iPhone, such as the upcoming iPhone 14 Pro Max and iPhone 14 Pro. Both smartphones are expected to release sometime this year.

On the other hand, the standard versions of the iPhone 14 will still carry on with the notch design that previous Apple smartphones have been flaunting.

2023 iPhones to Ditch Notch

On top of that, Young said that Apple has yet to fully adopt the new pill and punch hole look in all of its smartphone models in 2023, which is rumored to arrive in the iPhone 15 lineup.

What's more, the analyst said that by 2023 the two holes could also get smaller than in the iPhone 14.
