"Powers" the television series is coming PlayStation network in December, and the first two episodes will be directed by David Slade.

Sony made the announcement of Slade being hired as director on the PlayStation blog. Slade is known for directing a variety of critically-acclaimed television series, including episodes of book adaptation "Hannibal" and "Breaking Bad." He has also directed films such as "30 Days of Night," which was another comic book adaptation, "Hard Candy" and "The Twilight Saga: Eclipse."

As his filmography displays, Slade has a penchant for dark and macabre material. Though "Powers" is a superhero story, it is on the grittier side, as the world of super-powered heroes is presented in a realistic way and from the point of view of the cops who have to interact with them.

The comic book was created in 2000 by writer Brian Michael Bendis and artist Michael Avon Oeming. The comic focuses on homicide detectives Christian Walker and Deena Pilgrim, part of the Powers Division. They take on cases that involve "Powers," which is society's name for people with superpowers. Following in the footsteps of Alan Moore's 1986 comic book masterpiece "Watchmen," the series asks the question of what a world with superheroes would really be like and if everyone with superpowers would be able to cope with them.

The "Powers" comic book has had over 90 issues published since it debuted, though it moved from its first publisher Image Comics to current publisher Marvel Comics in 2004.

According to the blog post, the show is being produced by Jinxworld and Circle of Confusion, with Sony Pictures Television. Brian Michael Bendis, Charlie Huston, Remi Aubuchon, Michael Avon Oeming, Michael Dinner and David Engel are the executive producers for the series. The blog post also states that filming will begin soon, though no announcements have been made about which actors will be playing the characters of the show.

This will not be the first time "Powers" tried to reach televisions. A pilot for Fox's cable network FX was filmed in 2011 and additional scripts were written, but then FX passed on the series.

The "Powers" television series was announced at Sony's E3 press conference in June. The company then announced that the first episode would be posted free on the PlayStation Network. The entire "Powers" series will be free for PlayStation Plus subscribers. The PlayStation Network is accessible via the PlayStation 3 or PlayStation 4 consoles.
