Outlast shocked gamers when it released in 2013 for PC and in 2014 on PlayStation 4. Regardless of what platform you played it on, the results were the same: absolute terror.

Few games captured the sense of helplessness and raw dread like Outlast, so perhaps it isn't surprising to hear that Outlast 2 is in the works.

Just in time for Halloween, developer Red Barrels has announced that the sequel will be coming in 2016. A short teaser and a brief description from the developer is all we have to go on, but the game already sounds intense.

Outlast 2 will star a new cast of characters and a new setting. It will, however, keep the first-person viewpoint and night vision camera found in the first game.

"No conflict is ever black and white," the developer writes. "But once the dust has settled, the victors get to decide who was right and who was wrong. Who is good and who is evil. Human nature pushes us to extremes of violence and depravity, which we then justify by divine inspiration and a promise of paradise to come. Horror rises from desperation and blind faith. Outlast 2 will test your faith, pushing players to a place where going mad is the only sane thing to do."

Co-founder David Chateauneuf goes on to say (via IGN), "We have even more surprises and I can't wait to tell you all the ways we're going to make Outlast 2 gamers suffer."

If that's not intimidating, I don't know what is. From the description and trailer, it sounds like the game will tackle some big ideas like religion and faith, which is sure to make for an interesting experience.

Horror games have seen a resurgence as of late, with titles like Outlast, SOMA and Until Dawn all scaring their way to positive reviews from critics and fans alike. A multiplayer-only Friday the 13th game is currently seeking funding on Kickstarter, and promises to pit a superpowered, player-controlled Jason against a team of (mostly) helpless teenagers who must survive his onslaught.

You can check out the teaser for Outlast 2 below. The game will be releasing on Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC sometime next year.
