Riot Games has announced that massive changes will be coming to League of Legends, and one of the most significant updates is on the champion select system.

The current champion select system is one of the most outdated features of League of Legends. With it, gamers only call out the positions and roles that they want through a chat box, while hoping that all the members of the group would be working together to craft a balanced team.

With this system, players can simply select their champion and call out their position even without consulting their team members. In some cases, bickering and fighting ensues, especially when players are fighting over which character to choose and which roles to play.

The new champion select system, which can be accessed through the public beta, will not solve all the shortcomings of the outdated system. However, it is certainly much better compared to the old one.

With the new system, players are given the choice of choosing two preferred positions before even joining the matchmaking queue, with the options being top, mid, bottom, jungle and support. Players can also choose the fill option if they are willing to play whichever position is available. This ensures that the team members already know their positions even before the actual choosing of champions begins.

After the players are slotted into a match, they can then begin selecting their preferred characters in accordance with the position that they chose or were given, if they selected the fill option. This is not locking in the champions yet though, as the ban phase will follow.

During the ban phase, the three players at the bottom from each team will choose which champions to ban, one champion per player. This gives more people the choice in which champions to ban, whereas previously, only the team captain was allowed to choose the banned champions.

Afterwards, players can finally select the champion that they will be using for the game.

As mentioned, the system will not solve all matchmaking issues, such as when two players want to use the same champion but in different roles. However, in terms of giving teams a bigger chance of choosing champions that can cohesively work together to win a match, the new champion select system is so much better.
