For those playing Fallout 4, the standard companions for wandering around the wasteland might seem a little tame, especially when you're going up against hordes of raiders, super mutants and all the other nasties that prey on lesser species.

But what if you could change your companion to something a bit more vicious, perhaps to a deathclaw, vicious dog or radscorpion? Wouldn't such a follower work better in fighting any enemies you come across?

Now, a mod exists that lets you do just that: if you want to change out your companion to something different, you can.

This is from the description of the creature follower mod, which is now downloadable:

"You can have either a deathclaw, yao guai, gen1synth, gen2synth, cat, Mutant Hound, super mutant behemoth, raider dog, gorilla, radscorpion, or a vicious dog. They have full follower features excluding the relationship chat. They do not take up the follower slot so you can technically have two followers with this."

Of course, there is a note that if you choose a cat with the mod, the cat won't follow you into combat. Because, well, it's a cat and it only does what it wants, rather than what you want.

The mod page also gives full details on how to load the mod and use it while playing the game.

Of course, other mods also let you tweak with your companion settings. One mod actually gives you a whole pack of dogs, which might prove more effective than a deathclaw, because Dogmeat accepts commands easier than any other follower in the game.

Another mod lets you turn your baby into a mini nuke, because why not make your children help you survive the wasteland? Basically, the mod lets you launch your baby from a catapult at unsuspecting enemies. That's probably the most unexpected attack of all: what enemy will ever see that coming?

Fortunately, modding is something Bethesda has always supported, encouraging players to get creative in making a game experience that's fairly customizable. And although mods were once the stuff of PC gamers, now mods work on consoles, too.

"We want to do it in a way that's easy," said Bethesda marketing executive Pete Hines to Gamespot. "This is not about, 'You have to have a PC,' 'You have to do it yourself.' The idea is you go to play the game, there's a menu option, you click on it, and there's a bunch of stuff for you to download. And you click on the stuff that you want and you start playing a game with these new mods. So we want it to be a really streamlined, fun experience. There's still specifics that we have to work out. It's part of our post-launch plan."

Fallout 4 is available now for PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4.
