Gearbox Software, the developer behind successful franchises such as Borderlands, is set to expand its wings beyond the U.S. and is forming a new studio in Canada.

On Dec. 11, Gearbox revealed that it has expanded its operations and has forayed into Canada by setting up a new studio called Gearbox Studio Quebec.

For the unfamiliar, Gearbox is headquartered in Frisco, Texas, for the past 16 years and the Quebec City division is the first time the developer is setting foot in another country. The developer has let on that the company's Quebec studio will be focusing on developing new games that are based on the developer's franchises.

To fulfil this goal, Gearbox is increasing its manpower. The company's founder and President Randy Pitchford also revealed that the expansion to Canada was part of Gearbox' overall growth to aid it in meeting the demands for delivering top-end triple-A content.

With the second team in place in Quebec, Gearbox should be able to easily achieve its targets. The company is also committed to take another exciting step toward the development of its new studio.

"[This is] where we strive to team up with some incredible talent in the world of video game development outside of Texas to help us build fun and exciting video games within our tent-pole brands." said Pitchford.

Gearbox' move comes in the wake of a slew of successful titles in its popular Borderlands franchise. Borderlands 2 was a blockbuster and aggregated sales of over 12 million copies. The Quebec studio will aid Gearbox as it readies to introduce its new title Battleborn, a hero-based shooter, which is inspired by multi-players games such as League of Legends.

The expansion makes Gearbox among the largest privately-owned independent studios in the industry.

Sebastien Caisse will be the Co-Studio Head and Director of Operation for Gearbox Studio Quebec.
