The classic Resident Evil games are more about survival than combat. While more recent survival horror games have leaned toward action and spectacle, Resident Evil's slower, more methodical take on scares lends itself well to gaming — needless to say, there's a reason why the franchise is still going strong today.

That being said, you can't have a game that's nothing but empty hallways and moody lighting — at a certain point, something big has to happen. That's where Resident Evil's slew of boss monsters come in: instead of ducking zombies and running past Hunters, there's only one way through the worst Umbrella has to offer. Resident Evil 0 is no different — and the series' only prequel has its fair share of hulking monstrosities.

First up is the Giant Scorpion, otherwise known as the Train Scorpion — while it may be the first boss, players who haven't quite acclimated to Resident Evil's patented style of play may be caught off-guard by this giant bug. If you've been having trouble getting past Resident Evil 0's first major foe, look no further: this guide will make the Giant Scorpion fight a breeze.

At such an early point in the game, players won't have much in the way of supplies. Thankfully, that means the fight is more about bringing exactly what you need instead of managing two characters' inventories.

To trigger the fight, you'll need to progress through the game until Rebecca is stuck in the room with the dumbwaiter. As Billy, use the ladder in the Conductor's Room to enter the dining car, then run through it to the other side. Here, you'll find a small room and the ice pick you need to free Rebecca — but don't turn back just yet. In a small side-room, you'll find the Hunting Rifle and a box of shotgun shells — if you have the room, pick them up immediately. If you need to free up some inventory space, feel free to drop your ink cartridges — you can always go back for them if you need to.

Once you've grabbed the Hunting Rifle and reloaded all of your guns, head back to the bar to trigger a cutscene — it's time to take down the Giant Scorpion.

As far as Resident Evil fights go, the Giant Scorpion is pretty basic. There are two things you'll need to keep in mind: firstly, don't attack while its claws are covering its face, as any shots will simply bounce off. Secondly, make sure to get up close to it and aim down — again, any poorly-aimed shots will just bounce off its tail and do nothing. If you follow those rules, the fight will swing between firing down at the scorpion's head, then retreating when its claws come up.

The real challenge in this fight will come from the camera itself — as the Giant Scorpion charges, the game will switch between one of two angles. If you can, push the monster as far back as you can — the wider shot is far easier to fight with and should make aiming a lot easier. Using the Hunting Rifle can make this easier, but the scorpion will retreat from enough handgun shots.

After a few dozen shots, the Giant Scorpion will slump over dead. Make sure to go back and grab any supplies you set down, and you'll be on your way to free Rebecca!
