Nintendo enthusiasts can now pre-register to get their hands on Miitomo, the first effort of the Japanese company to enter the mobile game market.

Miitomo is scheduled to be officially released in March 2016.

"Miitomo is a social experience that uses Nintendo's Mii characters to engage friends in a lighthearted, playful and welcoming social setting," the company says on the game's official page.

If you are excited about Nintendo's first foray into the mobile gaming area, and you are in one of the eligible countries, pre-register now. The countries are: United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Ireland, France, Belgium, Germany, Austria, Luxembourg, Spain, Italy, Netherlands, Russia, Australia, New Zealand and, obviously, Japan.

For the pre-registration process, users will need a Nintendo Account. In case you do not already have one, here is a complete guide on how to create it.

Nintendo is teaming up with DeNA, a mobile gaming company, to craft five smartphone games. Even if the most famous videogame characters from the company will not appear in Miitomo, Nintendo says that the second smartphone game has a big chance to feature some of them.

A few bits and pieces of information about Miitomo surfaced, though. Players will play using their Mii character, which is basically a 3D avatar that can be fashioned to look similar to its master. The characters will interact with each other in a virtual environment. Nintendo goes as far as to say that the ecosystem aims to bring friends together like never before.

If this sounds like a mash-up of gaming and social media, you are probably right.

The company promises that the Mii characters will feature speech-based interactions. Another social media inspired aspect is that players can take and share photos with their friends within the game.

Currently, the game is open for free download on Android and iOS. Nintendo did not specify exactly when the game will officially go live, so all we know at the moment is that it will happen sometime in March 2016.

Looking at the recent financial results from the company, it seems imperative that the game pulls Nintendo out of the dump. The company registered poor numbers, but its upcoming mobile games and the much-awaited NX device could tip the scales.
