The 2015 Chevrolet Corvette Z06, tagged as "the big nasty" by GM product head Mark Reuss, will be sold at prices that begin at $78,995 for the coupe version and $83,995 for the convertible version.

GM also called the Corvette Z06 "the most powerful and technologically advanced model in the iconic sports car's 62-year history."

While the base price tags of both the coupe and convertible versions already make it the most expensive car that GM is selling in the United States, the price of the Corvette Z06 goes up even more when purchasing additional packages.

The Z07 Performance Package that includes Brembo carbon ceramic-matrix brake rotors that improve brake performance, Michelin Pilot Super Sport Cup tires and front and back adjustable aerodynamic components, can be purchased for an additional $7,995.

The carbon fiber ground effects package that adds carbon fiber features such as the front splitter, rocker panels and a bigger rear spoiler, can be purchased for an additional $2,995.

The Corvette Z06's 6.2-liter, V8 engine produces 650 pound-feet of torque and runs at 650 horsepower. Similar to the Corvette Stingray, the Corvette Z06's engine features direct injection, continuously variable valve timing and cylinder deactivation.

The sports car is also capable of massive downforce, which is the ability of a vehicle to stay glued to the road even around corners. This is especially important, as most cars in the market are the exact opposite, in that turning corners leads to so much lift.

The Corvette Z06 improves upon some technologies that were introduced with the Corvette Stingray, which includes usage of lightweight components and advanced driving technologies, with adjustments made for the vehicle's capabilities. For example, the aluminum frame structure of the car is 20 percent harder than the one used in the fixed-roof, previous version of the Z06.

In addition to the base price of the vehicle and additional packages that will be purchased, buyers also have to pay for tax and registration fees. All these additional expenses push the price of the vehicle to almost twice that of the price of the regular Chevrolet Corvette, which starts at $53,000.

However, the regular Corvette only has 455 horsepower, which is already twice that of most vehicles but nowhere near the power packed in the hood by the Corvette Z06.

Dealers in the United States will be ready to take orders on the fourth quarter of this year, with deliveries for the car beginning early in 2015.
