Obsidian and Paradox Interactive made use of their stage time at the Game Developers Conference and revealed their upcoming role playing game, Tyranny.

The adventure takes place in a universe where (surprise, surprise!) a cataclysmic conflict between good and evil took place. The truly surprising element is that the bad guys prevailed and the main character of the game embodies one of the servants of the winning side.

Simply put, you play as an apprentice of Kyros the Overlord, virtually making you an evil character.

As judge and executioner of Kyros's law, you have the power to decide the faith of thousands. The gameplay description hints that, as with most recent RPGs, you will have a choice. You may inspire loyalty and deliver justice or act as a malevolent character and make your name synonymous with cruelty, punishment and fear. The poor people of the Tiers will suffer (or rejoice) as a direct result of your choices.

Obsidian Entertainment promises that, regardless of your actions, the watchful eye of the Overlords Archon of Justice, Tunon the Adjudicator, stays fixed on you.

Judging by the screenshots the gaming company provided, Tyranny took some notes from Pillars of Eternity (PoE). We certainly hope that the writers were as inspired while creating content for Tyranny as they were for PoE, as the latter was nominated for best story earlier this year.

In January, the Writers Guild of America announced the four best gaming narratives that landed on PC during 2015. Obsidian's Pillars of Eternity was one of the nominees alongside CD Projekt Red's The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, Microsoft's Rise of the Tomb Raider and Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed: Syndicate.

Just as a reminder, Obsidian Entertainment is responsible for developing South Park: Stick of Truth, Dungeon Siege III, Fallout New Vegas, Alpha Protocol, Neverwinter Nights: Storm of Zehir, Neverwinter Nights 2: Mask of the Betrayer, Neverwinter Nights 2 and Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords.

Both the publisher and the developer of Tyranny kept mum about global availability or pricing, but they hinted that a release is probable sometime during this year.
