Fans worried about the fate of Clementine in The Walking Dead series of video games will learn what happened to her soon: Telltale Games confirmed that season three will arrive in 2016.

In an interview with Mashable, Telltale Games CEO Kevin Bruner spoke about the future of the game franchise and unveiled plans for the release of the first episode of season three by the end of this year.

Season two ended with yet more choices, meaning that a future story could branch off in several different directions. However, Bruner explained that the developer has a plan in moving forward with the story, although he also mentioned that season 3 would do something "unexpected."

"When we got to Season 2, we had a plan in the back of our minds of how we would make all these endings keep those threads going forward," said Bruner. "From a role-playing, interactive storytelling point of view, it is not from the bag of tricks that we've ever shown anybody before."

The challenge this time around, though, is not only keeping fans of the first two seasons, but to also rope in new players. Bruner hopes that season three will appeal to both, thanks to their unique approach to the storytelling.

There is one problem, though: many players have switched platforms or upgraded consoles since they last played The Walking Dead season two. Considering that decisions made in the previous games will affect season three, how will Telltale handle that?

The developer wouldn't go into details, but do have a plan in place that will allow previous saves to get ported into the new game.

"We've got a strategy to help Season 3 players ... collect all their data from the previous games," Bruner said. "[W]e didn't have the cloud services in Season 1 that we have now. So we're going to have a solution for everybody that we're not talking about it yet."

BioWare had a similar problem with its most recent Dragon Age: Inquisition game. That developer decided to put up a website and let Dragon Age players record all the choices they made in the previous two games and then link those choices to their copies of Inquisition.
