DeWalt might be known for its power tools, but the manufacturer is now getting into the electronics game with a new phone, specifically designed to endure a labor-intensive environment.

The MD501, as it's been named, is based on the Android operating system. Although it's not widely available for purchase yet, it's creating a stir with its features and IP68 certification.

Its IP68 status means that it's fully resistant to dust and waterproof up to 30 minutes when immersed in two meters (6.56 feet) of water. Additionally, the phone has been tested to withstand drops from two meters high onto rugged concrete. This means that, if you're working on a construction site and the MD501 slips out of your pocket, you won't have major breakage.

For high-speed functionality, the MD501 is 4G, and it also offers GPS location services. This positions the phone as a business tool as much as it is a durable device to have on the job.

On a similar note, the MD501 can hold two SIM cards. This means that the phone can operate separately on a personal and business level, or one card can be dedicated to calls, while the other is used for data.

For convenient charging, the MD501 can be placed on a Qi wireless charging pad — no wires or plugs needed. On standby, the phone has a battery life of approximately 450 hours.

The phone itself weighs less than a pound, meaning it doesn't feel intrusive in the pocket. It's also compatible with microSD cards of up to 64 GB and comes with an MT6735 1.3 GHz processor for speedy use. Similar to other Android smartphones on the market, the MD501 has Wi-Fi capability, as well as near-field communication and Bluetooth 4.0.

For those who intend to use the phone in their downtime, the MD501 has a 13 megapixel rear camera and a 5 megapixel front camera. This makes for detailed shots, even in the elements, where this phone is designed to perform best.

At the moment, interested customers can sign up on the DeWalt website to receive updates on the MD501 and when it'll be released. DeWalt, which is based in Baltimore, Md., has been in existence since 1922.
