Square Enix has been making a habit of releasing previous Final Fantasy titles on Steam as of late, and now Final Fantasy IV in its 3D incarnation is the latest game in the series to appear on Steam. It's nice that the RPG giant is releasing its older titles on Steam, as it's a great way for those that missed the games to play them without hooking up an old console, but the more recent games in the franchise have yet to make the jump to PC.

That changes today: Square Enix quietly announced that Final Fantasy XIII and its sequels will be available on Steam in the coming weeks. By looking through the store on the official Square Enix site, one can see that the game's release platforms have been updated to include the PC version.

The game's Steam page also went live today, though there is a bit of conflicting information: The two pages list different release dates! As of this writing, the game's official page erroneously lists a Sep. 18 release date, while the Steam page has the game's release set for Oct. 9, which is the actual release date.

While Square Enix did announce that the sequels, Final Fantasy XIII-2 and Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII, will also make their way to Steam, they did not confirm solid release dates. Instead, Square Enix assured fans that all three games would be released by spring 2015.

Since Final Fantasy XIII was released in 2010, the game has received mixed reactions from fans and critics. Many claimed that much of the freedom of Final Fantasy had been stripped away in favor of a linear game, while others defended the game's combat systems. Final Fantasy XIII-2 was more warmly received, with major changes to the mechanics and design of the game overshadowing its lackluster story. Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII was not a critical success, with several reviewers claiming that the main character was unlikable and the game's design was based solely on grinding and repetition.

Final Fantasy is currently making an impact overseas: Final Fantasy Type 0 HD finally received a Western release date of March 17, 2015. A demo for Final Fantasy XV will be included with Type 0 HD, and also debuted its first trailer in over a year.

Final Fantasy XIII will be available on PCs in just over two weeks with an Oct. 9 release. Until then, players can pre-order the game from its listing on Steam.
