Monday marks one of the United States' most important holidays: Independence Day, aka the Fourth of July. That means many Americans will have the opportunity to enjoy a nice, long three-day weekend.

That also means that many Americans will find themselves searching for things to do during the weekend that don't necessarily involve eating a lot of barbecue and shooting off fireworks.

Fortunately, there are several big movies playing in theaters this weekend that should appease every member of the family. Finding Dory opened last weekend and is the perfect flick to take the kids to. There's also Independence Day 2 for those who want to watch Americans taking on aliens.

This weekend also sees several new films making their way to the big screen. Here are the movies opening this Fourth of July weekend:

The Legend of Tarzan

Rating: PG-13

Although the Rotten Tomatoes score is pretty low for this one, the real draw of this movie are its stars. Margot Robbie, who is suddenly one of Hollywood's "it" actresses, stars as Jane, with True Blood's Alexander Skarsgård taking on the role of Tarzan, complete with loincloth. The story picks up later in Tarzan's life: Tarzan is now Lord Greystoke, married to Jane. However, when he gets invited back to the Congo as a trade emissary, he realizes that he is nothing more than a pawn.

The Purge: Election Year

Rating: R

Reviews on this horror flick are mixed, but it's likely a fun ride through the horror-twisted and gruesome world of The Purge franchise. If moviegoers want their blood and gore without all the serious stuff, this is a good choice for the weekend.

The BFG

Rating: PG

Although video gamers question the title of this movie as being kid-friendly, the film itself is. Directed by Stephen Spielberg, The BFG (which stands for Big Friendly Giant, by the way) is about a young girl who befriends a giant who needs her help to take on a group of man-eating giants invading the human world.

Our Kind of Traitor

Rating: R

For those who like more thrilling adventures, Our Kind of Traitor tells the story of an English couple who inadvertently get caught up in the Russian mafia. Soon, the two act as spies for the British Secret Service and must travel through Paris, Bern, the Alps and London in service of their country.

Marauders

Rating: R

This is the kind of movie that Bruce Willis fans will love: Willis plays a bank owner accused of an elaborate heist of his own company. It's up to a team of FBI agents to help his character uncover the truth about the heist, as well as figure out the larger conspiracy at play.
