Shortly after Marvel vs. Capcom 3 developer Ryota Niitsuma said that the next installment in the crossover fighting game franchise is not in the works, rumors surfaced that Marvel vs. Capcom 4 would be announced at Sony's PlayStation Experience 2016.

It seems that the rumors turned out to be true. The next game is not titled Marvel vs. Capcom 4 though, as it will instead be released as Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite.

Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite Unveiled

The announcement of the fighting game was accompanied by a trailer that featured Ryu and Mega Man from the Capcom side and Iron Man and Captain Marvel from the Marvel side.

According to a post on the official PlayStation blog, the game will feature several exciting single-player modes and rich multiplayer content. Single-player modes include Arcade, Training and Mission, with a cinematic Story Mode that is said to be "visually stunning and immersive."

Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite Features

In Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite, players will once again be able to select from their favorite characters in the Marvel and Capcom universes and engage in 2-on-2 battles, which is different from the previously used 3-on-3 format.

However, as previously mentioned in rumors, the Marvel side of the game will likely focus more on the characters popularized by the ongoing Marvel Cinematic Universe such as The Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy, with popular fighters from the X-Men franchise such as Wolverine and Magneto expected to be unavailable in the game because of licensing issues.

Seen in the announcement trailer of the game are Ryu and Captain Marvel using Infinity Stones to gain power, with the items to be a huge part of Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite. As with Marvel lore, there are six Infinity Stones, one each for power, time, space, soul, mind and reality, with players to be able to utilize them in the game to gain certain advantages over their opponents.

The Story Mode of Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite, meanwhile, will feature an original story line that will reveal the story behind the clash of the two universes, as well as the game's new villain.

Questions Remain For Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite

It is expected that X-Men characters will not be a part of the game, but apart from the four fighters shown in the announcement trailer, the other Marvel and Capcom heroes that will make up the game's roster are still unknown.

Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite is said to be coming to the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC in late 2017, but so far, there has been no announcement on a more specific date for the game's launch.
