Dunkin' Donuts will introduce their U.S. customers to a brand new concoction - a croissant donut hybrid! Isn't that a cronut? You may ask. But no! According to the Massachusetts-born, donut chain, their offering is a completely different product from that other pastry hybrid.

For starters, Dunkin' Donuts will offer sugar glazed croissant donuts, the same used on their Glazed Donut to give it a similar taste. The original cronuts, created by Dominique Ansel Bakery in New York, are cream filled. Although Dunkin' Donuts does not dismiss the idea of introducing more varieties, including cream or jelly filled ones, in the future.

According to the company's president of global marketing, John Costello, Dunkin's croissant donuts are not the same as the ones popularized beginning in May 2013 in the Big Apple at all.

"Are we copying a specific bakery in New York? The answer is no," he said.

In addition, he says that they are not specifically copying the cronut in particular because many other bakeries and pastry chefs around the country have been experimenting with mixing donuts and croissants for the last 20 years.

Also, the company executive chef, Jeff Miller, boldly said that their product is superior, "I've tried the product that you mention. As the executive chef of Dunkin', I like ours better."

Their version of the croissant donut will sell for $2.49 - much less than the $5 it costs for an Ansel Cronut.

Dunkin' Donuts' new croissant-donuts will officially launch on Nov. 3 at specific U.S. locations along with other new product offerings to try to appeal to the on-the-go breakfast eating crowds.

A similar product was already offered at Dunkin' Donut locations in South Korea called the New York Pie Donut. The item has become hugely popular and is part of the chain's permanent menu in that country.

The announcement follows after the company revealed that their sales have been faltering due to stiff competition from cafes and breakfast fast food restaurants.

The Dunkin' Donut croissant donut will have 24 layers of fluffy buttery dough and have 300 calories.
