It takes a certain level of coldhearted cruelty to simply abandon a pet without care or thought. Animal lovers were outraged on Tuesday when the Scottish Animal Welfare Charity (SPCA) released a press statement saying they are looking for the person who abandoned a dog, along with all his belongings packed into a suitcase, at the Ayr railway station on Jan. 2.

The Shar-pei mix was found tied to a railing with the suitcase close by.

The SPCA took in the abandoned dog and found out, from a microchip embedded under his skin, that his name is Kai and is about two years old. The person registered to the chip had sold Kai via Gumtree, a popular online classified ads site in the UK back in 2013. Unfortunately, they could not provide the address of the person who purchased Kai.

According to reports, the suitcase contained a pillow, a toy, a food bowl, and some food.

"Regardless of the fact Kai was left with his belongings, this was still a cruel incident and we are keen to identify the person responsible. If anyone can help, we would ask them to get in touch as soon as possible," an SPCA spokesperson said.

The Animal Health and Welfare Act of 2006 in Scotland makes it illegal to abandon pets. Therefore, the SPCA is seeking any information that will lead to finding out who abandoned Kai at the station. Those found guilty of abandoning their pets may be banned from ever owning another animal.

Meanwhile, Kai is reported to be doing well in foster care while the SPCA seeks a new home for him. Fortunately, he has displayed no signs of neglect or abuse and was even seen in a video showing off some of his tricks, such as shaking hands.

The SPCA reports that they have already received more than a hundred offers to adopt Kai, including offers from the United States. However, they will make every effort to find him a loving forever home within Scotland.
