Mobiquity, a digital consultancy firm for the world's leading brands, has released its study results, offering new insight on tech adoption across generations of Americans.

Titled "The Rise in Digital Adoption Among Baby Boomers," the survey highlighted the unprecedented rates at which the older generations of people in the United States adopted technology. Mobiquity conducted the survey on US-based consumers, both for users of iOS and Android.

The digital consultancy study challenges the long-held preconception that the older people, especially those from the Baby Boomer generation, are generally slower in adopting the technological lifestyle that is continuously increasing in scale in today's Information Age.

Baby Boomers refer to those from the sharp population increase post-World War II usually defined from 1946 to 1964. Boomers grew up and lived most of their lives without the same technology- like smartphones and the Internet - that has dominated the younger generations' lives.

Keeping Up With The Times

In the Mobiquity survey, it revealed that 88 percent of Baby Boomers agree that technology was beneficial for them in the middle of the global coronavirus pandemic. It was surprisingly close - only 3 percent less - compared to those from the younger generations. However, when the survey inquired whether they felt "safe and secure using new technologies," the agreement from Baby Boomers dropped to 78 percent, drawing a wider margin than the 86 percent of non-Boomers.

In terms of enjoying testing new technologies, 77 percent of Boomers agree while 88 percent of non-Boomers do.

"Baby Boomers are adopting technology more rapidly than we previously believed, but there are still variations in digital preferences that brands will need to consider as we move into the next phase of digital transformation," said Brian Levine, Mobiquity's VP of Strategy and Analytics. "Considering the needs of users from all generations will be key to developing a highly effective digital solution."

The largest generation gap revealed in the survey has to be the participants' response to business interaction methods. More than half (55 percent) of Boomers still prefer to conduct business face-to-face compared to 72 percent of non-Boomers choosing digital transactions.

This inquiry is set against the pandemic context, leading companies to adopt contactless services and solutions to curb the risks of spreading the disease - resulting in a hybrid experience. This "new normal" has led to the Boomers' increased adoption of modern technologies. For example, their generation saw a 431 percent increase in grocery curbside pickups, 410 percent in retails, and 300 percent for restaurants. Of course, non-Boomers who are already familiar with these options showed a less drastic increase: 169 percent for grocery, 195 percent for pickups, and 151 percent for restaurants.
