These past few years, more and more desktops and mobile variants have adopted the Zen 3 architecture, so it is just natural that the high-end desktop or HEDT segment would follow the ongoing trend.

The current generation of AMD Zen 2 Threadripper processors codenamed Castle Peak are available in 24, 32 and 64-core variants. But the upcoming Zen 3 Genesis Peak series may start from 16 cores instead of the usual 24 cores.

AMD Zen 3 Genesis Peak series

Yuri Bubliy, the developer of Clock Tuner for Ryzen and also known as 1usmus, tweeted a riddle HEX code on his Twitter account which reads "47454e4553495320313620434f524553". This code basically translates into ASCII as "Genesis 16 Cores" and Genesis Peak is the official codename for the Zen 3 Threadripper series.

There are also rumors that Genesis Peak refers to the platform while Chagall is the processor itself, but those are not confirmed yet.

If Genesis Peak refers to a platform and not the processor, it is possible that we might get a 16-core EPYC SKU too. However, Videocardz have confirmed that Bubliy's Twitter leak is linked to AMD Threadripper and not to EPYC.

Though Threadrippers like the 1950X and the 2950X did have 16 cores, AMD chose to integrate 16-core parts in mainstream desktop Zen 2. This is with the likes of the Ryzen 9 3950X, which then continues in Zen 3 as the Ryzen 9 5950X. This leaves HEDT to begin from 24-cores, like it usually does.

If AMD does bring back a 16-core Threadripper, it could be a great alternative to those who would need numerous core counts but would rather make use of quad-channel RAM and more PCIe lanes.

What people are anticipating for now is how AMD would choose to name an SKU in order to avoid any confusion with the current Ryzen 9 5950X. It is also not known if the new Threadrippers would be compatible with the current TRX40 motherboards. AMD is still expected to release a statement about Zen 3 Threadripper this coming CES 2021.
