Those who were lucky enough to get their own PlayStation 5 have been looking for ways to make their consoles look better, and there's no better place to get that than custom faceplate makers, such as PlateStation5--until they have decided to stop.

CMP, formerly known as PlateStation5, is back with a new PS5 faceplate.

PS5 Faceplate Maker is Back

According to VGC, the company has been forced to stop their operations as PlateStation5, and instead, rebrand as CustomizeMyPlates.com back in October, but then had to stop creating faceplates altogether after they claimed that Sony had threatened them with legal action.

Nevertheless, months after they have pulled out of the scene, CMP is back this week with CMP Shells that were listed on Monday, January 18, 2021.

CMP Shells have added a listing for a black PlayStation 5 "shell," which is available starting at $49.99 and will ship out in February, according to the seller's official website.

Along with the listing, the company has decided to address the issue with Sony.

"The patent is pending and all sales finalized before it's approved is untouchable. We didn't know before. Now we do," the company wrote. "Further we have not replicated anyone's proprietary design. Our shells improve upon the original by allowing for more ventilation. We will be able to sell even after the patent is approved."

Limited Slots for the First Batch

CMP says they will be making 1,000 of these black PS5 faceplates for the first batch, saying that they were able to sell double that number during their days as Cuztomize My Plates.

They also shared that during their previous brand, the company worked with manufacturers from the United Kingdom and China to make the faceplates, which are made from "premium industry-standard plastic."

If you buy from the company, the Kratos Bundle, which is the most expensive of its three products at $69.99, will include the matte black shells that will replace the console's white design, a black vinyl middle piece inspired by the "God of War", and a Ragnarok vinyl controller set, which is again inspired by the game.

All the shells offered by CMP as of now are for the PS5 Disc Edition only, so if you got a Digital version, you might be out of luck.

Could ther PS5 Shell Sellers Face the Same Fate?

However, there are tons of other faceplate makers that have created their own PS5 shells, especially after CMP first pulled out of the faceplate market due to the issue with Sony, such as the Canadian brand Dbrand.

According to the gaming news outlet, Dbrand will soon be launching their own set of black PS5 faceplates and even suggested that Sony will not be able to stop them.

Nevertheless, one brand, SUP3R5, has allegedly suffered the same fate as Customize My Plates as it appeared that they have canceled all of their pre-orders for a customized PS5 black faceplate after alleged threats to their staff.

On the other hand, the owner of another peripheral firm known as Game Armor, which only launched in December, said that he does not expect his company to get the same treatment from Sony as their name is not "deceptively close" to any trademarked one, plus their designs do not include any trademarked logos as well, nor do the shells infringe on design patents, so they can "sell safely."
