We know that first impressions count, but they may count even more than we think. A strong first impression can last a lifetime. In the business world, first impressions can mean the difference between success and failure.

Entrepreneur and New York Times best-selling author, Randy Garn is a firm believer in the adage that you never get a second chance to make the first impression. He explains, "It's human nature to make snap judgments about others when you first meet them. They will also make the same snap judgements about you, so you want your first impression to be positive."

As someone who has extensively traveled the world and met individuals from all walks of life, Garn has kindly volunteered to share with us his top 5 tips on making the best first impression possible.

Set the Standard

You can't judge a book by its cover, but appearances are extremely suggestive. Make sure that yours suggests that you are a focused, resilient, dynamic, disciplined, and conscientious individual who pays attention to the finest details. A sharp and clean appearance is the building block of any positive first impression.

Positivity Is Your Superpower

Negativity is a massive turn-off in any situation, so stay positive when meeting new people. This will increase your approachability and improve the overall feeling of your first-time interactions. An upbeat manner gives off an energetic vibe, which suggests you are a person who relishes a challenge, never quits, and has a bright outlook on life.

Charm to Disarm

A winning smile goes a long way when winning strangers over, so make sure yours is genuine. Also, be attentive and courteous to people you have just met. Tell them a bit about yourself but also ensure you ask them open-ended questions too. People love talking about themselves, so the more you can get them chatting, the more pleased with you they'll feel. Good manners make everyone feel valued.

Talk it Like You Walk it

The art of good conversation cannot be overestimated, particularly in a day when so much of our communication is remote and digitalized. Conversation is all about the give and take. So, do not be overbearing. Let the conversation ebb and flow naturally. Keep it polite and never overstep the mark, but don't be nervous or guarded either. Understand that conversation should act as a natural flow of topics, emotions, and anecdotes. If you can master these seamless transitions, you can create a wonderful first impression.

Be Yourself

Last but not least, be yourself. Though it sounds simple, you'll be surprised to know how many people let nerves and expectations get the better of them in social situations. Opting to hide behind a facade isn't ideal, and most people can see right through that (it makes you seem less genuine as well). Everyone respects authenticity, so stay true to yourself, keep it real, and be your own person. You'll be surprised at how well-received your integrity to self will be.
