What is Age of Empires?

The "Age of Empires" is a series of historical real-time strategy video games developed by Ensemble Studios and published by Xbox Game Studios. The first game was released more than 20 years ago, and now a total of eight games within the series have already been launched.

The video game focused on events in three continents: Asia, Africa, and Europe, from the Stone Age all the way to the Iron Age. The game explored the formation and expansion of the Roman Empire.

The "Age of Empires II: The Age of Kings" was set in the Middle Ages, and the expansion focused on the Spanish conquest of Mexico.

The "Age of Empires III" was set in the modern period, when Europe was colonizing the Americas and Asian nations. The latest one, "Age of Empires Online," is different as it is a free-to-play online game using Games for Windows Live.

A spin-off game, "Age of Mythology," was set in the same period as "Age of Empires," but it focused on mythological elements of Norse, Greek, and Egyptian mythology. A fourth one, "Age of Empires IV," will be released on April 10, 2021.

The whole series is a success, as it sold more than 25 million copies. Critics also gave it favorable reviews due to its historical theme and its fair play.

The game series has numerous expansions that focus on historical events. The game has The Rise of Rome, which focused on the Roman Empire. It has The Age of Kings that focuses on Europe and Asia during the Middle Ages.

The expansion pack, The Conquerors, is set in the Middle Ages, but it includes the Spanish conquest of Mexico, Attila the Hun, and El Cid.

The first expansion of "Age of Empires III" called The WarChiefs takes place during the Americas' colonization. The second expansion is The Asian Dynasties that focuses on Asia.
