According to the recent study, COVID-19 vaccines could not potentially harm the mother's placenta--the opposite of what social media previously claimed in the unconfirmed reports.

During the pregnancy, the baby inside the womb is fully dependent on the nourishment supplied by the mother. The placenta is responsible for providing the nutrients and the oxygen that the baby needs for development.

According to the Q&A Interview with CNN on Tuesday, May 11, Dr. Richard Beigi said that there is no "theoretical reason" that leads to claims that COVID vaccines are harmful to the placenta.

Beigi, who belongs to the Public Health Preparedness Expert Work Group of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists added that there are also no vaccines connected to infertility.

Despite the information, a series of misinformation continues to spread in social media which drives people to be hesitant in taking the vaccine, especially expectant mothers.

In line with the underlying false claims, Northwestern Medicine's assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology, Dr. Emily Miller said that there came a point when they have seen a growing number of patients having a "vaccine hesitancy" which mainly targets pregnant people.

On Tuesday, May 1, Eureka Alert posted a new study about the relation of the COVID-19 vaccine to the placenta. According to Miller and the rest of the researchers, COVID-19 vaccines do not cause damage to the mother's placenta during pregnancy.

Additionally, Miller hopes that their study will diminish the concerns of the people about the potential danger of receiving a vaccine jab on pregnancy.

Placenta as the 'Black Box'

According to the authors of the study entitled " Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) Vaccination in Pregnancy posted in the Obstetrics & Gynecology journal, it was the first research that tackled the coronavirus vaccines' impact on the placenta.

The maternal placenta forms during pregnancy. Besides its function of supplying oxygen to the baby, it also produces the necessary hormones which are transmitted to the antibodies to boost the protection of the baby after the mother gives birth.

According to one of the co-authors, Dr. Jeffery Goldstein, the placenta resembles the "black box" inside an airplane. The pathology expert added that they have conducted an examination that involves 116 unvaccinated and 84 vaccinated pregnant women in a Chicago-based hospital.

The researchers sought proof of the abnormal blood flow among the mothers. This case highlighted the previous study about its link to the pregnant women who are COVID-19 positive.

The experts ruled out that there was "no increased incidence" of the abnormal blood flow that happened on the vaccinated women.

What came out on the internet is misinformation that suggests that the COVID-19 vaccine could impact the mothers to reject the fetus through an immunological response.

COVID Vaccines Have Benefits For Babies

If there is lingering fake news about the dangers of the COVID-19 vaccines to the mothers, there is also a study that proved that they have the benefits handed to the babies.

The early study which was authored by Goldstein and Miller said that vaccinated pregnant women tend to create and transfer the antibodies to the fetuses.

If a woman receives a vaccine during the third trimester, there is a good chance that she would pass the antibodies to her baby compared to those who got the vaccine shot closer to their delivery periods.
