We asked auto insurance expert Laura Adams MBA to clarify the rules on Long Island based auto insurance for new brand electric cars. This is what she had to say.

Those wondering about the intricacies of car and vehicle insurance in Long Island are right to be concerned. The rules are a little complex when compared to other areas. If you don't know the rules for your local area, how can you go about avoiding hefty fines or even a jail term?

We asked Ms. Adams, an expert with AutoInsurance.org, some tough questions about the categories of driver's insurance for high tech electric vehicles in Long Island and she gave us some straightforward answers. We go into more detail on her premium take on the law, below.

The Different Categories of Car Insurance Policies Available to Long Island Residents

You may wonder which type of car insurance policies are available to you if you live in the region. You can split all types of insurance into either a liability or a full coverage policy. Full coverage protects you against lots of factors, like crashing, personal injury, and uninsured motorist damage. Liability only covers outside forces.

Do you Need Insurance to Drive in Long Island?

You cannot drive in the state of New York without liability insurance at the minimum. Make no mistake: full coverage is better protection from the things that could go wrong while you are on the road.

What is the minimum requirement for insurance in New York State?

Here are the minimum requirements for driving in this state.

To drive in New York, you need:

  • $10k property damage cover

  • $25k bodily injury cover

  • $50k for accidental death in an accident

If more than two people are injured in the accident, you need to have double the amount of accidental death cover and bodily injury cover. This seems like a lot of money, but you will quickly burn through these funds if you are in an accident that needs to go to court.

What Factors Influence the Cost of Coverage for Electric Cars?

In New York State, your Zip code, gender, age, type of vehicle, driver history, and credit all affect how much insurance rates will cost you. Insurance rates for electric cars tend to be less because they are brand new. However, they will vary per individual. The variety means that the best and fastest way to find out which is most affordable for you is to compare prices on insurance for vehicles online.

How can you Lower the cost of Vehicle Insurance in Long Island?

If you live in Long Island and would like to lower the cost of your car insurance, you should consider having a tracking box installed. These new devices allow insurance firms to track your driving skills. The black box records your speed, the likelihood of slamming the breaks on, and other factors. It does this so that the insurance firm can determine whether you are a safe driver or not. This can lower premiums, but it may also raise premiums if you are not careful.

Research all the factors before you have a black box installed. They will consider which times of day you drive, so this might not be the best way to save money on your car insurance if you work night shifts. Instead, we urge you to shop around and compare prices to get the best deal on auto insurance.
