This is the first in a series of joint military exercises that will occur over the coming months in the East and West Seas. The exercise, the first joint drill after the sinking of the South Korean corvette Cheonan in March 2010, has drawn condemnation from Pyongyang, North Korea.

National Submarine Day on April 11

As per an online article by National Today, April 11 is not any ordinary day for folks who are fond of submarines.

The special day marks the monumental purchase of the US Navy of its first-ever modern submarine that goes by the name USS Holland VI.

The US government bought its first modern submarine long ago in 1900. During that time, the brand new Holland VI cost a steep $150,000.

The USS Holland VI impressively sports advanced features for a submarine during the 1900s, including a dual propulsion system and a separate main and auxiliary ballast systems.

US President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden, accompanied by Commanding Officer Matthew Horton, board the Virginia-Class submarine USS Delaware during its commissioning commemoration ceremony at the Port of Wilmington in Wilmington, Delaware, on April 2, 2022.

What's more, the first US modern submarine also features an advanced weapon system that would surely help the Navy to taunt or fight off other nations.

National Today added in the same report that back in 1969, Senator Thomas J. Dodd filed a bill that would officially celebrate National Submarine Day every April 11.

However, as it turns out, the President of the US back then, Richard Nixon, did not proclaim the National Submarine Day as there were no records to prove so.

Despite that, the US Navy, along with the submarine community, has been celebrating National Submarine Day every April 11 to commemorate the monumental purchase of the Holland VI.

The Kamaaina Sunday is celebrated a day before the official celebration of the National Submarine Day on April 11, which falls on a Monday.

The Kamaaina day is open to Hawaii residents, as well as military members and other guests, wherein they could go to the submarine museum for free.

Not to mention there are also additional activities like live shows and STEM demonstrations that visitors could enjoy.

First Submarine in the US

However, it is worth noting that the Holland VI was not the first-ever submarine ship that the US has purchased.

In fact, the first submarine of the country is known as the USS Alligator, which played a major role when the US was still fighting in the American Civil War.

The first known submarine of the US served in the Navy for almost a year--from June 13, 1862, until April 2, 1863.
