The Instagram account of former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan was reportedly hacked on Monday, Aug. 1.

His followers on the platform saw that the hacker was sharing bogus links tied up to a fake Elon Musk's crypto account.

Moreover, the person behind this incident has been posting cryptocurrency giveaways on Khan's account. This alarmed his party members that some people might fall victim to this trap if they did not pay attention properly.

Pakistan's Prime Minister Imran Khan removes his facemask during a joint press conference with Afghan President Ashraf Ghani (not pictured) at the Presidential Palace in Kabul on November 19, 2020.

The Instagram account of the current Chairman of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) was closely monitored earlier this week after a new incident of hacking took place on social media.

According to Business Standard, the hacker of Imran's IG account was sharing "fishy" links, which directed the users to a malicious website. Once someone clicks this link, there's a possibility that he/she could lose his crypto assets.

To avoid the worst possible scenario for crypto investors and traders, Imran's co-party members urged his followers to stop following his Instagram account at the moment. Additionally, they advised them to avoid interacting with each post that the hacker shares.

Imran Khan is a prominent figure inside and outside the social media space. As of writing, he has more than 7.4 million followers on his official Instagram account.

Back in late 2021, the Pakistan Embassy in Serbia posted a tweet about the unpaid salaries of government officials. The officials later found out that an unidentified person hijacked the account.

How to Protect Yourself From Instagram Hack?

With the looming threats coming from unsuspected attackers, social media platforms are no longer "safe spaces" for users.

Meta, the company behind Facebook and Instagram, has already launched the Security Check feature, which notifies people whose accounts have been previously hacked.

This update looks forward to improving the users' account security so they can prevent potential hacking incidents in the future.

According to Mashable, you can protect your IG account by using the 2FA or two-factor authentication method. By using it, you will be given a One Time Password, which you can use to verify your information online.

Instagram is also testing out a feature that secures a user's account via WhatsApp. However, this is only limited to some countries as of press time.

If you want to fully protect your social media account, you can opt for Instagram account insurance. The Israeli startup Notch came up with the idea of offering digital asset insurance to all users.

Having this digital insurance can safeguard your information from hackers and other people who are interested in hijacking your account online.

As per Tech Times' previous report, Notch is offering this unique insurance for a monthly price of $38. If you want to use it for the whole year, you will pay $459.

If someone hacks your Instagram account, you are already eligible to receive $244 daily. This benefit will only stop after Notch solves the problem by recovering your hacked account.
