VanMoof's latest generation of e-bikes are set to perform with a higher level of anti-theft technology. A significant change to the S3 and X3 bikes is the removal of the tube-based display in exchange for Halo Rings near the buttons on each side-one ring is the digital bell, while the other controls the boost. They have upgraded gear shift tech as well for a smoother ride, as reported by Engadget.

A Cowboy's employee, wearing a protective face mask, rides a Cowboy electric bike in the streets of Brussels, on July 28, 2020.

Aside from indicating the battery life, it will also show you how much the bike's motor is working and its lock status. This gives riders more visibility for a safe ride on the road.

Better Anti-Theft Technology

One of the biggest selling points of VanMoof bikes is its security. Therefore, the anti-theft technology in the S5 and A5 comes with a better kick lock on the rear wheel. The e-bikes will also automatically unlock if they detect the user's phone nearby; otherwise, riders can unlock it with a numerical code that can be tapped into the left handlebar.

In case someone managed to steal the e-bike, the lock will sound an alarm and a short while later, it will immobilize the functions of the e-bike.

Owners can also choose to pay an extra $398 for three years of coverage, which will come with support from bike hunters. The e-bike will transmit its location over 3G and the hunters are equipped with Bluetooth signal detectors to find stolen bikes.

Should your bike goes missing, you can mark it as stolen on the VanMoof app. In case hunters can't find it within two weeks, the company will replace the bike for you.

The company also added support for Apple's Find My network, but this will help e-bike owners find the bikers in a parking lot-not necessarily track down a stolen one.

New Features for the A5

The A5 now comes with a lowered step-in, which means it is smaller and will give riders a feeling of being closer to the road. It is very low-profile with a 463 Wh battery, while the S5 comes with 487 Wh. Both models take six and a half hours to charge. On a full charge, the A5 can go around 34 miles on full power or 87 miles on economy power mode. The S5 has a 37-mile range on full power that can be stretched to 93 miles on economy power mode.

VanMoof teased a fast charger as well, but the price is still being kept under wraps. On the other hand, the VanMoof V, which is the company's pricer high-speed e-Bike, production has been delayed to late 2023.
