Soon, iPhone 14 users can access the upcoming Emergency SOS via the Satellite feature which can allow them to send SMS during an emergency. This particularly lets them connect to the satellite so they could inform the emergency services about their current situation.

Of course, the feature provides convenience to people who want to seek help, especially for those who are outside the WiFi or cellular signal coverage.

A month ago, the Cupertino giant said that this update is expected to be available this month. However, Apple has not yet officially disclosed any information about its exact launch date.

According to Macrumors, the new feature could be released in line with the latest iOS 16.1.1. While iOS 16.2 is slated to become accessible in the Christmas season, there's still a slight chance that it would land in the same month.

More importantly, people expect the feature to be available to all iPhone 14 models this month, just before Thanksgiving Day kicks off.

How to Use Emergency SOS Via Satellite

If your smartphone has no mobile data or signal, you can still activate the Emergency SOS via satellite, the official website of Apple writes in a support document.

To start contacting emergency services, begin by naturally holding your phone in your hand, but refrain from putting it back in your pocket.

Additionally, you need to do this with a clear view of the sky. Surveying your surroundings for potential obstacles like trees is also important since trees with light foliage could affect the connection.

In case you get lost in the instructions, your iPhone has a comprehensive guide that you can use. Just follow the indicated steps there.

How to Text Emergency Services Via Satellite

The first thing you need to do is to call any emergency line that you know. Attempt to make a call to them and if your call fails to connect, you can begin clicking Emergency Text via Satellite.

Then, you can also try dialing 911 or SOS. From here, tap Emergency Services, then click Report Emergency. Respond to the emergency questions on the screen.

Once you're done with this, start contacting anyone from your emergency contacts. Don't forget to tell them your current location and what kind of emergency they will deal with.

Will This Feature Be Free in the Future?

Initially, the Emergency SOS via Satellite feature will be available in North America, particularly in the US and Canada. According to Apple, iPhone users can use it without any charge for the first two years. This indicates that the tech firm has plans to price it once the testing finishes.

Furthermore, the company also announced that more countries will benefit from this feature at the end of 2023.

Meanwhile, GSM Arena reports that the COVID-19 lockdowns in China could likely delay the shipments for the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max models.
