The International Baccalaureate (IB), an international nonprofit foundation based in Geneva, Switzerland, announced that ChatGPT is now allowed among young learners.

Some educational institutions have previously spoken about the ban on AI-powered tools in learning because it hinders students' learning capability. However, it appears that not all of them have the same perspective regarding using these AI programs.

The International Baccalaureate is now allowing the use of ChatGPT in quoting a content among pupils.

According to a report by The Guardian on Monday, Feb. 27, the IB has confirmed that pupils can now rely on chatbots if they want extra help writing essays.

When ChatGPT burst in popularity in November 2022, some people thought it could lighten the load for some tasks in school and work.

As such, some think that AI tools will be useful in the long run in writing articles and generating text prompts.

Although ChatGPT initially has a good reputation in the community, not all teachers agree to use it because AI-based cheating can happen anytime.

For Matt Glanville, the head of assessment principles and practice, using a chatbot is considered "an extraordinary opportunity" everyone should embrace.

"The clear line between using ChatGPT and providing original work is exactly the same as using ideas taken from other people or the internet. As with any quote or material adapted from another source, it must be credited in the body of the text and appropriately referenced in the bibliography," Glanville told the Times.

Less Prominence in Essay Writing Due to Chatbots

In the UK, thousands of children are entering in over 120 schools, according to the IB.

In the future, Glanville envisions that the escalating trend of chatbot technology will potentially lead to essay writing being less prominent.

According to the IB official, there's more to just clicking a button to generate AI content in an essay. Although the writing tasks are expected to be simplified further, pupils should do their part in determining the missed context in a story or comprehending the depth of an essay.

Outside writing, Glanville says that there will be some assessment tasks that will be conducted to reflect on the skills of the learners when doing essays.

While banning is not in the vocabulary of the IB when it comes to AI-produced work, Glanville acknowledges that submitting a ChatGPT-generated essay or assignment as their own will fall under academic misconduct. A pupil who will do this will likely face the consequences of his/her actions, per Daily Mail.
