The efforts of architects and designers resulted in a one-of-a-kind footbridge that presented a new typology of a bridge, now up and running over at East London overlooking Canning Town. The Cody Dock Footbridge does not need electricity to operate, and it helps the area lets boats pass through the waterway underneath, also ensuring that people may pass through at any given time.

Its team spent as much as 12 years restoring this historical site, particularly as the dock has been abandoned since the 1980s, featuring a new design for square-shaped bridges to roll over. 

Cody Dock Footbridge Requires No Electricity to Roll for Passing Boats

Gasworks Dock Partnership planned to create a "traditional bascule bridge" which is also known as a drawbridge that centers on opening up the pass for boats to go about their ways. However, Thomas Randall-Page, an architect, presented his new design to bring a new bridge design to life, centering on a rolling square that is never seen before. 

Randall-Page's design centers on a square that will be mechanically operated using two operator cranks that require no power to do their job and "roll" the bridge.

The team managed to create a 12-ton bridge in East London, given the same name as it had before, the Cody Dock Footbridge that keeps its history, as an economic and commerce figure.

Rolling Footbridge on Rail Cast Introduces New Typology

The design inspiration comes from Victorian forbears says Interesting Engineering, as regarded by its creators. 

"The bridge rolls on undulating rails cast into the concrete abutments on either bank. Ballast fills the top of each square portal, countering the weight of the bridge deck that connects them. This symmetry allows the whole bridge structure to smoothly role through 180 degrees to a fully inverted position facilitating movement of boats from the river to the dock."

Its latest development introduces a new bridge typology for bascules, preserving both history and its function in this architectural feat.
