The metaverse, a virtual platform where users may interact in a shared digital realm, has been a fad in the tech sector for most of 2022. However, as AI technology such as the ChatGPT chatbot advances, the metaverse's appeal to the masses is dwindling.

Even Facebook, which has changed its name to Meta, has jumped on the AI bandwagon.

While the metaverse was previously supposed to represent the future of online interaction, it is currently being surpassed by AI, which offers a more realistic and immersive experience - a promise the metaverse failed to live up to.

A Wedding in Metaverse Taco Bell

Despite the metaverse's downfall, there are still ways to utilize the platform.

A recent metaverse event saw a couple earn the opportunity to be the first people married at a Taco Bell restaurant in the virtual realm of Decentraland.

As vividly reported by Gizmodo, the event was both Taco Bell-themed and a traditional Indian ceremony, and actor Kal Penn hosted it. A licensed celebrant officiated the wedding, making it a legally recognized marriage.

This may have generated more news in mid-2022 when the metaverse was all the craze, but the Gizmodo piece points out something else.

The Taco Bell wedding served as both an advertising and a promotional event for both Taco Bell and the metaverse concept. It even turned out to be a special way of celebrating the couple's love.

Also, its participants considered it enjoyable and exciting. Even Taco Bell collaborated with a Twitch streamer to broadcast the Decentraland wedding.

The metaverse offers a unique experience - though marred by glitches, floating legless avatars, and a shortage of active users - but it is not enough to be the new online experience.

The Metaverse, A Lonely Place

Given the success of the Taco Bell wedding, we may say that the metaverse exists more as a corporate advertising tool or an online entertainment platform than as a commodity that individuals use in their daily lives.

While the metaverse was previously viewed as a replacement for real life and a way to alter the standard for the online experience, it is now evident that it will not achieve such goals, or at least not yet. After all, it looks like even tech giants are moving on.

Earlier this year, Microsoft closed its internal metaverse team to focus more on the online AI chatbot ChatGPT.

However, it may still be a platform that people can occasionally visit to appreciate the weird and contradictory experiences it provides.

While the metaverse's popularity is fading as AI science advances, it still can provide a unique and bizarre experience that cannot be found in real life. In the metaverse, the Taco Bell wedding was a celebration of love, a marketing ploy, and a reflection of our time.
