With the popularity of artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot ChatGPT, big Chinese gaming firms are rapidly adopting AI-generated content. This has prompted several developers to worry whether this new technology will soon replace their posts.

Top Chinese Videogame Makers Embrace AI

South China Morning Post reports that major Chinese videogame makers such as NetEase, miHoYo, and TapTap are already doubling investment in AI-generated content and offering competitive wages and internships to lure top talent.

NetEase, for example, has already integrated ChatGPT-like services into its upcoming mobile game, "Justice Online," which allows its users to communicate with non-player characters (NPCs) based on AI training models.

As reported in the same article, miHoYo, the developer of the popular action role-playing game Genshin Impact, is planning to participate in a new round of funding for Chinese AI chatbot firm MiniMax.

Is AI replacing game developers?

While some experts believe AI-generated content has a future to be an important part of the video game industry, they stress that technology cannot wholly replace human thinking.

They claim that using AI would result in more efficient game production and design, allowing game developers to focus on creative tasks that AI cannot replace.

The video game industry has undergone various transformations throughout the years, culminating in the billion-dollar industry it is today. Gamers have witnessed the evolution of the sector from pixelated 8-bit games to high-definition immersive games. It is now entering a new era with AI.

With over two billion gamers worldwide, it is no wonder that the sector produced $155 billion in revenue in 2020 and is still growing, according to Investopedia.

However, content creators in China are worried that new technologies such as AI could threaten certain areas of gaming talent. SCMP points out that Chinese gaming firms have historically been quick to incorporate new technology into their products, and AI will likely have a major influence on the gaming industry over the next five years.

In response to these concerns, several companies actively seek ways to include AI-generated content while retaining the human aspect of game production. The idea is to employ AI to complement, rather than replace, human creativity and intelligence.

Notwithstanding these efforts, the introduction of AI-generated content in gaming is expected to result in massive industry changes. As technology evolves, video game makers must ensure that the use of AI is ethical, transparent, and responsible and that it enhances rather than deviates from the gaming experience.

Apart from that, there has been an increase in the number of AI-created apps, which is creating alarm among internet safety organizations.
